Aage Gaup’s artistic legacy takes centre stage at Moderna Museet in Stockholm

On 7 November, Moderna Museet in Stockholm opens the major exhibition "Aage Gaup – Sculpting a Return/Hábmet máhccama". Sámi Dáiddamagasiidna has lent 18 artworks and three models from its collection, and we are both delighted and proud to contribute to the exhibition.

Running from 7 November 2026 to 24 January 2027, the exhibition is the most comprehensive presentation to date of Aage Gaup’s (1943–2021) artistic practice. Bringing together monumental sculptures, installations, scenographic works and models, it highlights the breadth of his artistic career.

Aage Gaup (1943–2021) came from Børselv but grew up in Romsdalen after being separated from his biological family during the forced evacuations of the Second World War. He later returned to Sápmi, and experiences of identity and belonging became central to his artistic practice. After studying sculpture at Trondheim Art School, he moved to Máze, where he helped establish Mázejoavku (the Máze Group), an artists’ collective that played a significant role in the development of contemporary Sámi art.

Gaup’s art reflects influences from international modernism while remaining rooted in duodji, a concept that encompasses far more than form and aesthetics, including knowledge, an understanding of materials, relationships and ethical values.

Through this exhibition, Moderna Museet seeks to highlight Gaup’s place in Nordic and international art history. We are proud to contribute to this effort, and above all delighted that more people will have the opportunity to discover his art.
