Kilder:

Hansson, Per: Mamma Karasjok, 1970

Løining, Bendiks: Beretning fra tiden før 1945

Petterson, Arvid: Fortiet fortid, 2008

Steen. The doctor lived at Kistrand in Porsanger, about 150 kilometres from Karasjok. It could take two to three days for the doctor to arrive, by which time the sick might have recovered or died. Things improved when the place got its own doctor in 1912.

The old and infirm who could not be helped at home by family or friends were taken out of the municipality. The closest old people’s home from 1902 onward was at Kistrand in Porsanger, but the elderly were also taken to the home in Lebesby or other old people’s homes.

Tuberculosis was a terrible and widespread disease. Finnmark suffered the highest mortality rate. Until 1919, sick people had to be taken to Tanagård or other institutions. That year, the local tuberculosis organisation built a tuberculosis home in Karasjok. Situated on a terrace on the north side of the river, it was a red-painted building on two floors with an attic. TB sufferers were placed on the ground floor, while the upper floor was used as a hospital ward and the attic used for staff.

It was operated by the Sami Mission. Elen Grande, from Leksvik in Trøndelag, was a sister from 1920 and worked in Karasjok all her life. Kirsten Svineng (also known as «Mamma Karasjok») was employed as a night nurse on the ward at an early date.

The German forces employed scorched-earth tactics when they pulled out of the area. All of the buildings, except for the old church, were burned in November 1944. While most of the locals fled to the forests or up to outlying areas to overwinter, about 50 elderly and infirm people headed south.

Some of the forced evacuees ended up at the tuberculosis home in Selbu. Many of them died while they were being evacuated or in the years immediately following the war. Not everyone could be brought home in the difficult rebuilding period after the war. In 1946, a small nursing and old people’s home was set up in a barracks. Not until 1956 was a new hospital and old people’s home brought into use. The Sami Mission and Elen Grande continued to manage its operation until a new municipal health centre was completed for the new municipal centre.

Sources:

Hansson, Per: Mama Karasjok, 1970

Løining, Bendiks: Account of the time before 1945

Petterson, Arvid: Fortiet fortid (English: The Hidden Past), 2008

Steen, Adolf: Finnemisjonen 75 år (English: The Finland Mission at 75 years), 1963

Kárášjoga buhcciid- ja tuberkolosaruoktu Karasjok Hospital and Tuberculosis Home Forfatter/Čálli/Author: Arvid Petterson Teksta Sámegilli lea Vuollelis Text in English, see below Før 1919 fantes det ikke noen offentlige helsetiltak i Karasjok.
