Throughout Sa\u0301pmi, rivers provide resources, create pathways between communities, and even form boundaries between places. The featured artists reflect on different relationships between Sa\u0301mi people and river systems, illustrating the important role Indigenous communities fulfil as stewards of their environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Josef Halse <\/strong>and<strong> Iver J\u00e5<\/strong><strong>ks<\/strong> create atmospheric works that convey a sense of how the spring thaw renews the flow of rivers, affecting human presence within the landscape. Works by <strong>Per Andersen<\/strong>, <strong>Petteri Laiti<\/strong>, <strong>J\u00f8rn M. Rivojen Langseth<\/strong>, <strong>Gerd Lor\u00e5s<\/strong>, and <strong>Britta Marakatt-Labba<\/strong> thoughtfully express how our relationship to water transforms over time, resulting in creative adaptations of both tools and social networks. Works by <strong>Nils Nilsson Skum<\/strong>, <strong>Jon Ole Andersen<\/strong>, <strong>Johan Rist<\/strong>, and <strong>Monica L. Edmondson<\/strong> reflect on how reindeer herders account for migration routes transformed by moving water, using their skills and knowledge to connect the lands that rivers touch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rivers have also been the site of Sa\u0301mi community resistance to colonial institutions seeking to exploit or restrict these natural cycles. <strong>Susanne H\u00e6tta\u2019s<\/strong> photographic work is a tribute to <strong>Synn\u00f8ve Persen<\/strong>\u2019s painting,\u00a0 <em>Dalende Symbol<\/em> (1984), about the Alta Conflict of the 1970s. <strong>H\u00e6tta\u2019s<\/strong> art reminds viewers of a pivotal moment when local artists aligned their practice with activism regarding Sa\u0301mi rights, marking solidarity with global Indigenous climate actions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through <em>duodji<\/em>, painting, prints, glass, and mixed media, these various Sa\u0301mi artists consider how the seasonal rhythm of rivers shape memory and community resilience. The S\u00e1mediggi also supports our efforts at local, national, and international dissemination of S\u00e1mi artwork. As part of our mission to facilitate access to the collection, artworks will be regularly exhibited at the S\u00e1mediggi main building through four rotating exhibitions each year. Each exhibition is installed in advance of the S\u00e1mediggi\u2019s plenary sessions, creating a new presentation for every plenary meeting.
